Beginners
Children 5 to 9 years old learn with Suzuki method. This is
a respected Japanese musical instrument teaching method, utilized
worldwide by major music institutions and public schools, and
proven to be effective with children for over 40 years. Alex,
however, likes to mix elements of other contemporary guitar teaching
methods including his own.
10 to 11 years old and up (adults included), are commonly already
strongly influenced by a wide variety of modern popular music,
thus need to be motivated by music styles they can relate to.
In this case, Alex favors a more practical hands-on approach;
lighter on theory at first.
Intermediate
The average intermediate student has learned a few scattered
pieces, plays a few melodies and has a general limited knowledge
of chord structures. Lacking general and advanced theory knowledge,
he or she usually cannot read music or isn't fluent with notes
on the fretboard. The dedicated intermediate student will want
to fill these above gaps and then move on to more complex guitar
techniques, songs and musical knowledge.
Advanced
This student has started band practices and/or performances, plays
rhythm and lead guitar, might have already composed a few original
songs and is inspired by a variety of musical styles. The general
focus would be on advanced technique and development, improvisational
refinement, the study of complex guitar scores and theory.
